Unicode SMS are characters outside the GSM 7-bit alphabet. For instance, languages such as Chinese, Cyrillic, Arabic or Thai contain characters outside this alphabet and must be sent using the Unicode standard. Unicode can represent any character in the world but takes more space within the SMS text. A Unicode SMS can only contain 70 characters. Normally an SMS text message contains up to 160 characters from the GSM alphabet. This alphabet knows all Latin characters, digits and a few special characters. Still not all mobile networks support Unicode SMS. For example, Unicode SMS is not supported for US mobile number destinations.
