Internet telephony is the use of the Internet for providing communication services (voice, fax, SMS, voice-messaging) rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or the traditional telephone company infrastructure and rate structure to exchange spoken or other telephone information. Other terms commonly associated with Internet telephony are Voice over IP (VoIP), IP telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband phone service. Internet telephony is more of an overall concept and stuffs such as VoIP is a means of transmitting voice to implement the concept internet telephony. Since access to the Internet is available at local phone connection rates, an international or other long-distance call will be much less expensive than through the traditional call arrangement. Or in a way VoIP can turn a standard Internet connection into a way to place free phone calls.
